Plants are not all doom and gloom, like when it comes to volatile organic compounds. Plants can filter ozone from your indoor air. That’s ozone as in smog, a common pollutant floating around in homes and offices, released by copy machines, laser printers and even some indoor air purification systems.

Don’t expect an Ozone Action Day alert at your office. The colorless gas has been linked to reduced lung function in humans. But there are ways to cut ozone in your home and office, by taking in a few plants.

Pennsylvania State University researchers recently conducted a study, looking at what three common house plants — the snake plant, spider plant and golden pothos — could do for indoor ozone. Tests in a simulated indoor environment showed that each of the three plants helped deplete levels of ozone in 38 to 120 minutes. All three species were equally effective. The results were published in a recent issue of HortTechnology, a journal of the American Society of Horticultural Science.

Icewall One, the Australia-based manufacturer designed these pre-fabricated remote shelter to create an instant and transportable home away from home for scientists based in inclement climes. But they don’t have to function only as research stations. Eco tourists like them too. Made of lightweight fiberglass, the modular igloo consists of 8 molded wall panels with 4 self-supporting floor panels. The fiberglass walls have polyurethane insulation with an R-value of a little over R-5; better than a tent, and there is ventilation at the top.

e-Ink displays are in our future: whether it is to build eBooks, display art/advertising or to be used in hybrid LCD/e-ink displays, they are bound to be everywhere one day. This advertising display from Neoluxiim is so energy efficient that indoor solar power is enough to get it going. That’s pretty much our dream gadget to display art in the office.

What’s the catch? Well, it dies after 18 month, which is a big issue in terms of e-Waste. If they can’t recycle/repair it easily, that’s a no-go for now…

We’ve replaced almost all our light bulbs with eco-friendly compact fluorescents, but there are still some lamps we still use energy hogging incandescents with — such as the light in our office. There’s just something about the pairing of CFLs and my LCD monitor that makes our eyes want to bleed. Both provide relatively harsh lighting, and since CFLs can’t really be adjusted we’ve let this one lamp slip. We may change our tune as soon as Sharp releases its LEDs. The bulbs come with a remote control which let you scroll through seven different intensities of white. It’s similar to a dimmer… As with most cool things, they’ll be in Japan first. Hopefully they’ll cross the Pacific soon!

Raising the bar further, Dennis Ingemansson has designed the Solar Gem superyacht that shows the trend toward the eco-friendly yachts of the future. Not only is it made of recyclable material, but it also has a hybrid electric system which is fueled by solar and wind energy. The eco-friendly yacht is equally luxurious, and comes with one owner suite with Jacuzzi, two VIP suites with Jacuzzi and 10 guest rooms fitted with all the lavish amenities. The tenders include an EC135 helicopter, one Dubai Sea Limousine, four Jet skis and two Jacuzzis. The 68.9-meter eco-friendly luxury superyacht is able to cruise at a maximum speed of 22 knots. With eco-friendly luxury yachting becoming quite popular with the super rich, we are going to see many more green yacht designs in the near future.

Who said you couldn’t hibernate in an office? Instead of a sterile and corporate interior, the comfy and cavernous spaces of French architect Paul Coudamy’s “bear cave” office design are inviting and built from wood off-cuts rescued from sidewalks, dumpsters and trash. Employing a spontaneous-looking aesthetic of found objects and interesting textural overlaps, spaces each have their own feel and unique treatment, depending on their use (more photos after the jump).

The office is designed for Beartech, an Internet hosting service in Paris. The spaces are organized into three different areas of work, leisure and conference.

The rear is the ‘serious’ space with Parisian rock and brick walls exuding an atmosphere of solidness that contrasts with the “wood vortex out of a natural disaster” that surges along the walls of the front meeting room.

A low honeycomb bench acts as a partition between the meeting room and working spaces, creating a definitely low-key but dynamic approach to materials and to re-thinking the office (all they would would need now is a furry office mascot).

Radius Tree of Charge is an excellent way to keep your things on eye and also safe. It organizes your daily stuff; cameras, mp3 players, phones, will rest on the base as they charge. The decorative tree made of powder-coated steel is not just low-maintenance greenery, but also functions as a key rack and magnet board. And with the photos of your loved ones, it becomes a family tree.
